Troubleshooting m4a Downloads

Very many thanks indeed to listener Rob Campbell for this solution.

Some people, when clicking on the “Download m4a” find the shows start streaming instead of downloading to their PC.

This behaviour is controlled from the Folder Options dialog, which can be found in Windows Explorer.




Select the M4A file type on the File Types tab, then click the Advanced button.



Most likely, "Play" will be selected as the default action. Highlight "Open" and click "Set Default"; the list entry will become bold.




Now, clicking "Download m4a" should bring up the browser's download dialog.

While we're in the Folder Options dialog, let's look at another behaviour many find annoying: When clicking a link for a spreadsheet or other document, it opens in the browser, rather than the associated application. To change this, select the file type in the Folder Options dialog and click Advanced. Un-check "Browse in Same Window". Now the file will open in the application.
